Practical Tips

Best Time to Visit

Shimba Hills National Reserve is a moist, tropical forest region, offering a cooler climate than the immediate coastline.
  • Ideal Time (Best Weather): The Dry Season (July to October) offers the best conditions for both game viewing and hiking. The trails to Sheldrick Falls are easier to navigate, and the skies are typically clear, offering excellent coastal views.
  • Wildlife Viewing: Early morning is the best time for spotting the Sable Antelope and observing elephants as they move to feeding grounds. Starting your tour early is highly recommended, regardless of the season.
  • Weather Considerations: The long rains occur between April and June, making the forest trails very slippery and potentially hazardous for the hike to Sheldrick Falls. If booking during this period, be prepared for mud and occasional fog, which adds to the reserve’s mystical atmosphere.

Health and Safety

  • Guided Trekking: The descent to Sheldrick Falls is steep and mandatory. It takes approximately 45 minutes down and 1 hour back up. You must be accompanied by an armed Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS) ranger for this section. Follow their instructions strictly.
  • Wildlife Awareness: Shimba Hills has a high density of elephants. Never exit your vehicle during the game drive unless instructed by your guide in a designated safe area.
  • Hydration & Energy: Carry plenty of bottled water—the humidity combined with the strenuous hike to the Falls can lead to rapid dehydration. A light snack (like a granola bar) is also recommended for the return trek.
  • Insects: Due to the forest environment, insects (including tsetse flies and mosquitoes) can be present. Use insect repellent consistently throughout the day.

Packing Essentials

The right gear ensures a comfortable and safe transition between safari vehicle and guided trek.
  • Footwear (Critical): Wear sturdy, closed-toe walking shoes or light hiking boots. Do not wear flip-flops or open sandals, especially if planning to descend to the Falls.
  • Attire: Dress in layers. The early morning can be cool, but temperatures rise rapidly. Long sleeves and pants are ideal for sun protection and defense against insects during the hike. Neutral colors (browns, greens) are best for game viewing.
  • Rain Gear: Even during the dry season, the rainforest can experience sudden showers. A lightweight rain jacket or poncho is a good backup to keep in your day pack.
  • Gear: Bring binoculars to better observe the rare Sable Antelope and the many species of forest birds. A small backpack is useful for carrying water and essentials during the hike.
