Itinerary
A Day Trip Focused on Marine Life, Coral Reefs, and Swahili Culture
6:30 AM - 9:00 AM
Phase 1: Coastal Transfer & Shimoni Arrival
Hotel Pick-up and Scenic Drive
Start your day with an early morning collection from your hotel in Mombasa or Diani Beach. This timing is essential to catch the best marine conditions and avoid afternoon heat. The drive south takes you through local villages and vibrant coastal landscapes.
Arrival at Shimoni Jetty
Shimoni is a historically rich, small fishing port known for its slave trade caves (which you may briefly view, depending on time/interest).
Logistics Note: Upon arrival at the Shimoni jetty, you'll meet your boat captain and receive a briefing on the day's safety and itinerary.
9:00 AM - 12:00 PM
Phase 2: Dolphin Safari & Kisite Marine Sanctuary
Boarding the Dhow & Dolphin Spotting
You will board a traditional, comfortable sailing dhow or a speed boat (depending on the booking) to begin the search for the resident dolphins, which thrive in this nutrient-rich channel.
Spend approximately 1 hour actively cruising designated areas. While sightings are not guaranteed (they are wild animals), the local success rate is extremely high. Keep an eye out for dolphins leaping and playing near the bow of the boat!
Arrival at Kisite Mpunguti
Sail to the heart of the Marine Park. This area is characterized by clear, warm waters and spectacular coral formations, making it a natural underwater playground.
12:00 PM - 2:30 PM
Phase 3: Snorkeling, Diving & Wasini Lunch
Snorkeling and Swimming at the Reef
Anchor in a calm area of the Marine Park for 1 to 1.5 hours. All equipment (masks, fins, life jackets) is provided. Dive into the 2-5 meter deep water to explore the "inner reef." Look for Giant Groupers, Parrotfish, Angelfish, and, if you are lucky, Green Sea Turtles feeding on the seagrass beds.
Optional Scuba Diving
Certified divers can arrange to use the boat's facilities for a guided single-tank dive in a deeper section of the park (must be pre-booked).
Lunch on Wasini Island
Head to Wasini Island, a small, beautiful coral island untouched by cars. Enjoy a multi-course **Swahili seafood lunch** (usually including grilled fish, crab, coconut rice, and local vegetables) at a cliffside restaurant with stunning views of the channel. Vegetarian options are always available.

Phase 4: Island Stroll & Journey Back
Post-Lunch Island Time
Take a short, gentle stroll along the Wasini Island **mangrove boardwalk** to stretch your legs and appreciate the unique coastal ecology. This is a perfect moment for peaceful relaxation before the return journey.
Departure and Transfer Back
Board the dhow back to the Shimoni jetty where your vehicle will be waiting for you. Relax and enjoy the scenic drive as you are transferred back to your original accommodation, arriving in the late afternoon/early evening (depending on traffic and hotel location).

Best Time to Visit
The Wasini Island Marine Safari is a full-day trip focused on ocean conditions, which dictate the quality of dolphin viewing and snorkeling.- Ideal Time (Clear Visibility): The Dry Season (January to February and July to October) offers the best water clarity for snorkeling in the Kisite Marine Park. Waters are typically calmer in the morning, which increases the probability of high-quality dolphin sightings.
- Tide Considerations: Snorkeling is best during high tide, as the water covers the coral, offering excellent viewing and easier entry/exit from the boat. Tour operators schedule departures around the tide tables to maximize your time in the water.
- General Weather: The coastal climate is hot and humid year-round. Expect high sun exposure between 9 AM and 3 PM.
Health and Safety
- Sun Protection (Critical): The sun’s intensity is amplified by reflection off the ocean surface. Apply reef-safe, high-SPF sunscreen liberally and frequently. Wear a wide-brimmed hat and sunglasses (preferably polarized) throughout the boat ride.
- Water Safety: Life jackets are mandatory and provided for all guests, particularly during the dhow ride and snorkeling stops. Listen carefully to your guide’s instructions when in the water.
- Motion Sickness: The initial boat ride to the dolphin sighting area and Kisite Marine Park can be choppy, especially in the channel. If you are prone to motion sickness, consider taking medication 30 minutes before boarding.
